Batting timing drills exist to close that gap, but most coaches are running the wrong ones. Why do most batting timing drills fail to transfer from the cage to games?

The short answer is massed practice. Most batting timing drills repeat the same pitch at the same speed until the hitter locks in a groove. That approach works for mechanics — not for timing. In fact, the science of fixing late swings in live at-bats consistently shows that random practice outperforms massed practice for game transfer, even when random practice produces more miss-swings during training.

Games are unpredictable: different pitchers, different arm speeds, different release points. A hitter who memorized timing for 60-mph front toss is often helpless against a pitcher varying 62, 68, and 72 mph in the same at-bat. Therefore, the most effective batting timing drills build adaptability — not a fixed groove. Specifically, they teach the brain to self-calibrate timing rather than match a remembered pattern.

What actually causes a hitter to be late on pitches?

Being late is almost always a load-timing problem, not a reaction-time problem. Specifically, the hitter starts the stride too late — so by the time the front foot lands, the swing window is already closing. There is a meaningful difference between reaction time and timing in hitting. Reaction time is the neurological gap between seeing the pitch and processing it. It is one of the most underused batting timing drills in youth baseball, and it targets the most common load-timing flaw directly: the hitter picks up the stride foot and immediately falls forward, collapsing the read window before the pitch is even trackable.

How to run the Float Variance Drill

The hitter lifts the stride foot and pauses briefly — that is the float — before falling forward into the swing. The cue is simple: “pick up and wait, then fall.” During the float, the back knee should track over the back toe, not collapse inside it, and the hitter’s weight stays loaded back until the pitch triggers the fall. For stride drill progressions that build on this pattern, start with a feeder who deliberately delays the toss by half a second between reps. Because the timing changes each rep, the brain cannot memorize a count — it must actually read the release point.

Furthermore, the float works with any stride type. High leg kick, medium stride, or toe tap all accommodate the pause. The length of the float adjusts naturally to the hitter’s timing window, which makes this one of the few batting timing drills that does not force a mechanical change on the hitter. What batting timing drills train game-like randomness?

The 2-Plate Reaction Time Challenge is the best batting timing drill for building the randomness that games actually require. Instead of training a fixed timing pattern, it forces the hitter to self-calibrate on every single pitch — which is exactly what a live at-bat demands.

How to run the 2-Plate Reaction Time Challenge

Pitch shape drills solve this problem. Instead of reacting to pitch speed, hitters train their eyes to identify the spin direction and ball shape out of the pitcher’s hand. For curveball and off-speed timing drills, gamified recognition — calling “curve” or “fastball” aloud before committing to the swing — outperforms passive reaction drills every time.

How long before batting timing drills show results in games?

Great post ! I have one point to make and wondering what your thought is on letting the back knee go over the back toe.
I think the float works a lot better when the back knee stays inside the toe. With that being said, I agree lift and going forward is harder to time than going back first; makes timing easier. However, I want best of both worlds by letting my hitter
to shift weight back BUT still keep knee inside back toe. Almost like pressing into the ground with back foot enables you to have that slight pause. You want that natural move forward, but back knee over the toe makes it harder to control and can affect head/vision problems. I learn so much from your material. Thanks Joey!

Andy, great question. I don’t force my hitters to keep the back knee inside the back toe. For some, this can cause undue stress to the ligaments in the knee. I prefer to have them create torque in the back hip by turning the back toe slightly in towards the pitcher and feel like they’re screwing their ankle into their foot – clockwise for a righty, and counter-clockwise for a lefty. The back knee will most likely track the toes doing this, but the backside will be in a better more stable position.

Does this back knee action during the “float” occur because of the anatomical structure of the knee? Ted Williams did it without the high leg lift but with the cocking of his front knee.

You mean the rear side pelvis being pushed toward the dugout during the load as the front shoulder comes down and in? Then the rear pelvis snaps forward as the foot plants as the front side pelvis goes back.in the video I emailed you you can see Williams really do that.

Joe, I know Williams turned his pelvis inward toward the catcher to “load”, but it isn’t a necessary motion. Science says the way you load the front/back Functional Lines (Thomas Myers in his book Anatomy Trains) is to take the front shoulder in and down towards the back hip. If the hitter inwardly rotates the pelvis towards the catcher too, then the Front Fascial Line never gets fully charged. I say to keep the pelvis in neutral (or parallel to the plate), and focus on taking the front shoulder in and down. The point is that the hitter charges the connective tissue pre-turn and gets the front leg open at landing…anything in-between is fine.
