Building Bat Speed with Tee Work

Some say hitting off a tee is nonsense – “Because hitters hit off a pitcher throwing a ball at them in games, dummy!”  Here’s the thing, these same coaches think power has nothing to do with spinal engine mechanics.  These same coaches haven’t changed their ‘philosophy’ in decades.  These same coaches have no clue that when THEIR hitters are slumping (high level MLB hitters, mind you) is because of the very thing, the very cornerstone of their teaching, is what’s causing it.  A stiff, rigid, old stubborn hitting philosophy is a one way trip to low batting averages, high strikeout rates, and highly frustrated hitters who haven’t been given ALL the tools to hammer their way out of hitting struggles and challenges.

Now, we shouldn’t lean on tee work because a hitter doesn’t gain timing benefits obviously, but we shouldn’t eliminate it completely either, especially when starting fresh with a new movement like the following ‘bounce’ technique.  If you hear one of these coaches say that tee work is nonsense, run for the hills!  Don’t pay them another dime.

To hit the ball well, you need to be consistent and use the right technique. A stable hand path and good bat grip skills help you hit the ball right. Let’s look at how to keep your bat path stable.

Proper Bat Grip Techniques

First, let’s talk about bat grip. Your grip can make or break your swing. You don’t want to choke the bat by over gripping and you don’t want to line up certain knuckles.  Why?  Because every hitter’s hand size is different.  Align the handle in the middle pad of the hand.  The ‘ball of the hand’, like the ‘ball of the foot’.  The hand of foot are reflective of each other.  This insures a perfect grip for any hand size.

I like top hand finger pressure, squeezing the bottom three fingers of the top hand during the swing.  Finger pressure creates a connection between the hands and the torso.  Boxers and MMA fighters do this before launching a punch.

Ensuring a Level Bat Path

Now, let’s work on keeping your bat path level. A level bat path is key for higher batting averages, less swings and misses, and less striking out in a season.  We want our hitters to match the plane of the pitch, which can mean 3-7 degrees up for a fastball, depending on the pitch velocity and zone location.  The higher the pitch is in the zone, the flatter the downward trajectory of the pitch.  The lower the pitch is in the zone, the steeper the downward trajectory.

This is why 15-20 degree barrel attack angles don’t put up consistent numbers.  My good friend Perry Husband uses an analogy, if you were firing a torpedo from the bottom of the lake to hit a speed boat skimming the top of the water, your timing would have to be perfect.  Your torpedo is the barrel attack angle and the speed boat is the incoming pitch.  Our goal is to fire the torpedo from the same water level as the speed boat, then it doesn’t matter whether we’re a little late or early!

In short, a level bat path improves the consistency of your hitting. By mastering this technique, you’ll hit the ball better game after game. Keep practicing and your swings will get more consistent.⚾
