I had heard of Sybervision back in the early to mid-1990’s, when someone told me about a Baseball With Rod Carew instructional VHS hitting video you could watch over and over of him hitting, and “magically” you’d start moving just like him!  At least that’s what I thought about it at the time, but there actually is some merit to it.

Some call Sybervision the Neuropsychology of self discipline, and has a basis in visual modeling — how we  learn and assimilate (neurologically, psychologically, and cognitively) skills and behaviors from the observation of others.

It is based on research conducted by Steve DeVore, and Dr. Karl Pribram, a brain scientist (who postulated the holographic brain theory) at the Stanford University’s Neuropsychological Research Laboratories.

One of the grand-dads of two hitters I worked with this past summer, Paul Rosemont, said this of Sybervision:

“The Sybervision concept is that if someone watches perfect action over and over, their subconscious mind and muscle memory will start to incorporate the actions. It’s ideal to view it before practicing but just viewing it is still supposed to work. The system was used years ago on college and Olympic level athletes.”

This video is a snapshot of Aidan’s swing from June 6-17th, 2014).  The swing was captured during soft toss.  In my notes,

  • BEFORE – on June 6th, Aidan had an excessive side bend at the waist after contact, and had a back leg angle of 115 degrees after impact.
  • AFTER – on June 17th, Aidan was extending up and over the catcher with his spine, and had a 105 degree bend in his back leg after contact.

Baseball lessons result?  More repeatable power.

 

The “WHY” Behind the Change

The challenges Aidan B. from Illinois was having were faulty spine engine mechanics, and not getting on plane with the pitch…here’s the baseball lessons breakdown:

  • Spine Engine Mechanics (according to Dr. Serge Gracovetsky) – During the Final Turn, the spine NEEDS to freely spring up and back over the catcher (extend through the head).  This is because we’ve already engaged two of three possible spine engine movements: 1) Side bending (down shoulder angle), and 2) Axial rotation (showing pitcher our numbers) before stride foot lands.
  • Get on Pitch Plane – And in order to get on a level plane with a downward traveling pitch, we must “get shorter” with the back leg.  The back foot placement has a role of swing stability as well.

I don’t agree with using technology to steal signs as these Astros did, but let’s look at their mechanics purely through the lens of mechanics.  Look, they still had to hit in 81 games outside of Houston.  Instead, consider how sound are they using human movement principles validated by real Science to hitting a ball?

All these guys, excluding Alvarez, are considered small sluggers.  They swing a big stick without not a lot of gifted-ness in the size department. How?  The following make up the Big-3 of the Catapult Loading System:

  1. ‘Showing numbers’ also known as ‘Neck Pressure’,
  2. ‘Downhill shoulder angle’, and
  3. ‘Hiding hands’ from the pitcher.

There are other Catapult Loading System principles like Hollow, Finger Pressure, One-Joint Rule, etc., but these are the biggest bang for your buck when it comes to building more consistent power.  Now, some guys exhibit all of these, or a couple, but the closer to all a hitter can get to, the more power they can generate.

Body Mechanics · Spinal Engine · Collapsing Backside · 6 Warning Signs

If you’ve told a young hitter to stay on plane and watched nothing change, here’s what’s probably happening: baseball swing dipping isn’t one problem — it’s six. Each cause has a different look, a different origin point, and a different fix. Before you give another cue, you need to know which of the six warning signs you’re actually looking at.

A reader sent in a coaching question that most youth coaches have faced at some point: “Helping get youth players to stay on plane and not dip their bodies when they swing.” Simple question, complicated answer — because there are six completely different mechanical breakdowns that produce the dipping pattern you’re seeing, and giving one hitter’s solution to another’s problem makes nothing better.

Additionally, there’s a distinction most coaches never learn: not all dipping is bad. The healthy spinal engine produces a teeter-totter shoulder action that looks like dipping from the wrong camera angle but is actually correct mechanics. This post covers both.

Joey Myers has studied baseball swing mechanics for 15+ years and has broken down hundreds of elite hitters frame by frame. This post addresses one of the most common reader questions received at Hitting Performance Lab.

What Does Baseball Swing Dipping Actually Mean — and Is All Dipping Bad?

No — and understanding this distinction is the first step. In a correct baseball swing, dipping is actually part of healthy spinal engine mechanics. The issue isn’t whether the body dips; it’s which kind of dip is happening.

In a healthy swing, the side bend at load creates what’s called the “downhill shoulder” — the front shoulder starts in a slightly lower position than the back shoulder. That’s the setup for what happens next. As the hitter turns, the shoulders teeter-totter: the front shoulder pops up, then back down again at the finish. Think of Mantle, Williams, Ruth, and Gehrig in their classic finish positions — the low front shoulder is a feature of the swing, not a flaw.

David Weck, founder of the BOSU ball and the RMT Club, describes this as the head-over-foot principle — the head shifts slightly toward the front stride foot, creating the side bend that enables opposite-action rotation. A healthy, accelerating-decelerating spinal engine is what you’re looking for. That shoulder teeter-totter is correct.

An unhealthy dip — the “collapsing backside” — is different. The whole body drops or tilts toward the trail hip. Posture changes during rotation. The hitter looks like they’re falling apart at the contact point. That’s what the 6 warning signs below are diagnosing.

The 6 Warning Signs Behind Baseball Swing Dipping

Each sign below is a distinct mechanical breakdown that produces a collapsing backside in the baseball swing dipping pattern. Importantly, Signs 1–3 often chain together — fixing Sign 1 frequently resolves Signs 2 and 3 as well.

Sign 1: Head Instability

There are three patterns to look for: chin drops to chest at contact (McCutchen, Arenado), head pops up with the bill of the cap rising, or the rear ear rolls to the rear shoulder (Bryce Harper, Prince Fielder). Any of these creates a threat to the central nervous system — and wherever the head goes, the body follows. The CNS responds to head destabilization by contracting the surrounding musculature, which collapses the backside. The neck brace drill addresses this directly — not an immobilizing brace, but a soft cloth one that provides tactile feedback.

Sign 2: Arching the Low Back

When the hitter arches the lumbar spine during rotation, the vertebrae compress and rotate simultaneously — essentially grinding. It destabilizes the lower-body foundation of the swing. The fix is the hollow position: the hitter pushes the lower back into the ground (posterior pelvic tilt) to remove the lumbar curve before rotation begins. Sign 3: Straightening the Back Leg

This one looks like a hip problem but is almost always a response to Sign 2. When the lower back goes into a compromised position, the back glute and quad fire to create stability — locking the back knee out as a byproduct. Professional studies of hitters consistently show the back hamstring activating significantly more in advanced hitters than in amateurs, who tend to recruit the quad and glute instead. Therefore, the correction sequence is: fix the hollow position first, add the neck brace cue, then introduce “bend the back knee and use your hamstring.” When the lower back is stable, the knee responds.

Why the Head Is Always the First Place to Check in Baseball Swing Dipping

Most coaches jump immediately to the hips or the lower back when they see a collapsing backside. However, head stability is the single highest-leverage place to start — because it sits at the top of the chain that produces Signs 2 and 3.

The central nervous system’s threat response is fast and automatic. If the head rolls backward (rear ear to rear shoulder), the CNS fires protective contractions throughout the posterior chain — the muscles that stabilize the spine. Those contractions pull the backside down. The hitter feels it as “going off balance.” What you see as a coach is the whole body dipping toward the trail hip.

In practice, coaches who start with Sign 1 — and only Sign 1 — sometimes find that Signs 2 and 3 clean up significantly within a few sessions without any additional intervention. That’s the chain working in reverse. Fix the top of the cascade, and the downstream compensations have less reason to exist. As a result, start here before moving to any other sign in the diagnostic.

Signs 4 and 5: The Over-Rotation Problems That Cause Baseball Swing Dipping

Signs 4 and 5 are the ones coaches most often mistake for correct mechanics — because the swing looks explosive. However, over-rotation in either the upper or lower half produces a collapse just as surely as Signs 1–3 do.

Sign 4: Over-rotating the Upper Half

When the sternum is past the contact zone at impact — chest pointing toward left field for a right-handed hitter — the hitter is making contact almost behind themselves. The barrel arrives late. Weak contact follows. The fix is the deep tee drill: set the tee in line with the hitter’s belly button and have them “hook” the ball, swinging the arms across the body to slow the sternum back to the correct contact position. Most hitters find this drill disorienting at first, which is exactly the point. Sign 5: Over-rotating the Lower Half

Think of a hitter’s contact window as 90 degrees of fair territory — from the first base line to the third base line. When the hips over-rotate and slide that window into foul territory, the contact zone follows. The hitter is still swinging hard; they’re just swinging to the wrong address. For example, George Springer is a strong model for lower-half management — he keeps the back heel down and the back foot sideways well past contact, which holds the hip window inside fair territory. The VeloPro resistance band, strapped to the back hip and ankle, gives real-time feedback for hitters who over-rotate. Additionally, the concept of keeping the back foot sideways like Robinson Canó addresses the same mechanism from a different coaching angle.

Sign 6: Core Instability

Core instability is the environment that allows Signs 1–5 to occur under load. When the core can’t maintain a stable base during rotation, posture breaks down — and any or all of the other five signs can appear simultaneously. The fix is off-field work: hollow holds, plank slides, reverse planks, twisting side planks, hollow-body rocks, and suitcase carries. Working with a trainer certified by the Functional Movement Screen (FMS) or TPI gives the most systematic approach to building rotational core stability.

How to Sequence the Dip Fixes So They Actually Stick

In other words, the order in which you address these signs matters. Jumping to a drill for Sign 4 while Sign 1 is still active is like fixing a roof while the foundation is still shifting.

Start with Sign 1 (head stability) — neck brace feedback drill during tee work. Run 10–15 contact-frame reps before any full swings. Once the head is consistently quiet, check Sign 2 (hollow position). Introduce hollow-hold practice as a daily warm-up: 3 sets of 20–30 second holds. Then reassess Sign 3. In many hitters, the back leg has already softened without any specific cue — because the low back isn’t demanding protection from the glute and quad anymore.

For Signs 4 and 5, run them separately: deep tee drill for the upper half (10 reps per session, tee at belly-button depth), VeloPro or heel-down cue for the lower half. Film from the pitcher-side angle and compare before and after. The change in contact quality on outside pitches is usually immediate and obvious when Sign 5 is addressed correctly. Finally, core work supports everything else — treat it as the maintenance layer, not the starting point.

Most coaches see measurable reduction in baseball swing dipping patterns within 3–5 sessions once Signs 1–3 are addressed in sequence. Signs 4 and 5 typically require a few more sessions to become automatic under live-pitch conditions.

In practice, coaches who work through this diagnostic sequence — starting at Sign 1 and working down the chain — report the same pattern: they find the right sign faster than they expected, the correct fix produces immediate feedback in batted ball quality, and the hitter stops needing repeated reminders because the root problem has been addressed rather than suppressed with a cue.

The hitters most likely to show multiple signs simultaneously are those with existing core stability deficits. In that case, the off-field hollow hold and plank work is not supplemental — it’s foundational. Without it, Signs 1–5 tend to return when the hitter is under competitive pressure, because the load exceeds what the core can stabilize.

This is why the neck brace drill — providing tactile feedback, not immobilization — is the first fix in the diagnostic sequence.

Can fixing the low back position really stop a hitter from straightening their back leg?

Yes — and this is one of the most counterintuitive results coaches see when working through the diagnostic sequence. The back leg straightens because the glute and quad are being recruited to create stability for a compromised lower back position. Once the hitter learns and practices the hollow position (posterior pelvic tilt — pushing the lower back into the ground before rotating), the back no longer needs that extra muscular protection. The knee naturally stays bent, the hamstring fires more appropriately, and the “back leg problem” resolves without a single cue directed at the leg.

What camera angle is best for diagnosing baseball swing dipping?

The pitcher-side angle is the most reliable for diagnosing all six warning signs of baseball swing dipping. It shows the back foot, pelvis position, spine angle, and shoulder orientation simultaneously at the contact frame. Catcher-side view works as a secondary check. Avoid the chest-on and side views for this analysis — they flatten the three-dimensional movement and make collapsing backside patterns nearly impossible to identify accurately. Film at hip height when possible and pause specifically at the contact frame, not during the follow-through.

Do youth hitters under 12 respond to the same dipping fixes as older hitters?

Yes — and in many cases younger hitters respond to the same baseball swing dipping fixes faster than older athletes, because they haven’t had years of compensating patterns reinforced. The terminology needs to be simplified: instead of “hollow position,” say “push your lower back into the ground.” Instead of “posterior pelvic tilt,” say “tuck your tailbone.” The neck brace drill works well at youth level because tactile feedback bypasses the cognitive processing that makes verbal cues unreliable for young athletes. The deep tee drill and heel-down cue are equally accessible at youth age groups.

Does baseball swing dipping hurt bat speed or power?

Unhealthy baseball swing dipping reduces both contact quality and power output — but not because the dip itself reduces bat speed. The issue is that a collapsing backside shifts the barrel path out of the optimal contact zone, compresses the kinetic chain sequence, and reduces hip-to-shoulder separation by allowing the spine to lose its stable anchor point during rotation. When the spine angle stays consistent through contact, rotational energy transfers from the lower half to the upper half efficiently. When it collapses, energy leaks at the transition point, reducing the effective force at the barrel.

Walking Mechanics: Key to Repeatable Power?

The following “compression signal” sequence is according to Dr. Serge Gracovetsky’s spine engine mechanics:

  1. Left front leg heel strike – compression signal travels up the leg into the pelvis telling it to open to the right,
  2. The signal continues up the spine into the shoulders, telling them to counter-rotate (left), and
  3. This is why your opposite arm and leg come forward at the same time.

Land Front Foot Closed OR Open?

Big guys like Barry Bonds and Miguel Cabrera land closed (less than 45-degrees). Small guys such as Ryan Braun and Jose Bautista tend to land open (more than 45-degrees).  Which way is the right way?

4 reasons to keep the front toe open (minimum of 45-degree angle):

  1. Joint Connection – Toe closed? So is knee and pelvis.  The compression signal travels fast after heel strike, so pelvis must be in neutral (or parallel to the plate) in order to open without friction,
  2. NO Separation – If toe, knee, and pelvis are closed after compression signal, then front shoulder has to compensate by flying open the same time as the pelvis.  This doesn’t engage our elastic energy systems.
  3. Compensation is Inevitable – We find the closed toe in hitters like Barry Bonds and Miguel Cabrera just end up peeling or jumping open anyway at or shortly after contact.  So why not get the toe out of the way to begin with?
  4. Pitchers Land Open – And also if you look at Olympic Throwers and Shot Putters, they all land open before they throw or “put” their objects.

 

Why the Timing of Torque is IMPORTANT

Torque timing in the swing, also known as shoulder-pelvis separation, is often cued wrong.  Instructors often yell, “Fire the Hips!”  In high level swing mechanics, we find the hips (or pelvis) does fire first.  But, the timing coaches cue on is all wrong.  Shoulder-pelvis separation occurs before the front heel touches down, NOT after.

Don’t Buy Into Fear Of Not Having Enough Playing Or Coaching Experience…

 

 

Have you ever wondered why we often fear the irrational?

From the time we were children, we looked under our bed and in our closet for the boogeyman and monsters. Perhaps you were terrified the first time you jumped into the deep end of the pool, or that first day of class. None of these things killed you, yet they felt like they would at the time.

You owe it to yourself to put any fears that no longer serve you aside.

A key factor in improving your kid or team’s hitting by swinging the bat smarter is ditching an irrational fear of not having enough playing or coaching experience.

Game Of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin once said, “Fear cuts deeper than swords.” Well, for hitting enthusiasts like you, this “sword” can slice right through your detecting and correcting swing challenges goals. It can drag you back to the old, ineffective ways of thinking, like falling for “Listen to the Guru because he said so“, the belief that wasting time on information that isn’t validated by REAL Science is the way to go. This can flat-out derail your success.

Currently, ESPN and the Aspen Institute reported on a study indicating that most kids stop playing baseball and softball by age 11. Combine this with the fact that coaches nowadays just want to win games and aren’t focusing on the processes that help them do that. I think buying into this fear is partially to blame, along with video analysis zealots staring at 2-dimensional figures on a screen and well intended coaches who aren’t updated on the research — sources that often support this myth and fan the flames of misinformation.

This has a hefty price tag: it can harm you by focusing on the wrong things.

I remember when I first paid that price. I first noticed it when I trusted MLB players (some Hall of Famers) and prestigious coaches in their books, telling me to do it this way because they said so.

It hurt my progress considerably as a coach following by blind faith because of their “expertness”. Fortunately, I overcame it by doing my own critical thinking and going down the many human movement science-based rabbit holes. You can, too.

I spent the past 18 years working on a fearless approach to hitting and helping friends and colleagues do the same. They were struggling to improve their hitters by swinging the bat more effectively, and more often than not, this fear is one of the reasons their hitters struggled.

Now, it’s true: what’s right for me and other successful hitting enthusiasts may not be right for you. However, if you’ve bought into the fear of not having enough playing or coaching experience, you may want to consider rethinking things.

We talk a lot about the principles of the Catapult Loading System.  Once you know what they are, the next question is when do we load up?  Great question. In this post Tom Myers explains about the 4 factors of springy fascia.  Think of fascia like the net bags that hold tangerines at the grocery store, and the bones, muscles, and organs are the tangerines in the netting.

When it comes to answering the question of “When?”, tip #4 in that post highlights what we call the “bounce”.  We want the hitter pre-loading the torso (Catapult Loading System), when the hitter makes their positive move towards the pitcher.  Before making the move, I tell my hitters to imagine a flashlight installed in their front shoulder.  The light shining out front of them.  I say to keep the beam shining out front until they start their positive move.  It is at that point that they initiate the pre-loading, so this timing allows them to “bounce” into the turn.

Batting Grip: “Door Knocking Knuckle” Swing Experiment

 

 

Question: Does a ‘door knocking knuckle’ batting grip increase bat and hand speed?

Using the Zepp (Labs) Baseball app, I wanted to use the Scientific Method to see if using the “gorilla grip” or “door knocking knuckle” softball batting grip produces more bat and hand speed.  One of my online lessons, Tyler Doerner, a red-shirt freshman at Manchester University in North Manchester, Indiana is interning for me this summer, and will be doing the experiment.

 

Background Research

This experiment is based on a book by Rod Delmonico called Hit and Run Baseball.  The book was written in 1992, and Coach Delmonico talked about a grip test that I do with my hitters to show them proper grip (included in video above).

To show how important grip is to swinging a bat, check out this podcast interview with kettlebell strength coach Pavel Tsatsouline.  He goes into depth, particularly grip strength training, about the connection between the grip and mid-section.

Also, Jedd Johnson’s Ultimate Forearm Training for Baseball Players has had a huge influence on me and the importance of grip.  Jedd has put together a pretty comprehensive training manual for both grip and forearm training for ball players.  Jedd played college ball, and is co-founder of DieselCrew.com, where he’s done amazing feats of grip strength himself.

Hypothesis

Based on the above research and my experience training hitters over the years, I think the “gorilla grip” will add more bat and hand speed, than the “door knocking knuckle” grip.  The problem with the “door knocking knuckle” softball batting grip, is that it doesn’t take into account different hand sizes.

When my hitters use the “door knocking knuckle” grip method, the elbows awkwardly hug together in the stance.  It puts the hitter in an nonathletic starting position.

Equipment Used:

Softball Batting Grip Experiment: Zepp

Zepp Baseball App

  • Zepp Baseball app,
  • SwingAway MVP Bryce Harper model (Tyler used a Solohitter I believe),
  • Camera phone and Tripod, and
  • Minus-3 33 inch comp bat.

Setup:

  • Solohitter was set slightly behind the front feedback marker, and ball height was about the hip.
  • First 100 baseballs were hit using a “Door Knocking Knuckles” softball batting grip.
  • Second 100 baseballs were hit using a “Gorilla Grip”.

Data Analysis & Conclusion

  • “Gorilla Grip” ended up, on average, 2-mph faster bat speed,
  • “Gorilla Grip” ended up, on average, 2-mph faster hand speed, and
  • “Gorilla Grip” ended up, on average, .005 seconds faster Time To Impact.

Notes

  • Tyler had little to no break in between the 100 swings because there was rain coming where he was, and he had to rush to get the experiment done, so even if he was tired during the “Gorilla Grip” test, the metrics didn’t show it.
  • An average increase of 2-mph bat speed can add 8-16 feet of batted ball distance.  1-mph of bat speed = 4 to 8-feet of batted ball distance, depending on pitching velocity.
  • The bottom line about the “Gorilla Grip” is that a 7 year old all the way up to a 21 year old can grip the bat handle in the same part of the hands.  It doesn’t matter the hand size.  The “Gorilla Grip” still works.  The same cannot be said for the “door knocking knuckle” softball batting grip.

In Conclusion

Try this test for yourself, and definitely tinker and test.  What I’d like to see from this same experiment in the future, is to have ample physical rest for the “Gorilla Grip” test, and see where it goes from there.  That being said, from the results of this softball batting grip experiment, I think we can put the “door knocking knuckles” grip MYTH to bed.

Pre-Loading the Torso Before Landing

Look, it’s not the front hip we should be worried about.  Young hitters have been over-coached for the past three decades to ‘load and explode the hips’, and that the ‘hips lead the way’.  Our concern should be, what happens before the hips lead?  Or, what should happen?  In other words, it’s not a “fly open with front hip” issue, it’s a ‘fly open with front shoulder’ issue.

Tony Gwynn knew the importance of keeping that front shoulder in.  CLICK HERE for a video I did on him. The torso MUST be pre-loaded to as close to landing as possible (watch main video above on how to do this).  This is how springy fascia in the torso is charged.

 

Timing: Varied Reaction LIVE Toss Drill (progressions & regressions)

Another coaching cue that just doesn’t work is, “get the front foot down early”.  This can create a host of other timing issues.  The hitting sequence is a ‘dance’.  You never see the pitcher get their stride foot down early, momentarily pause, and then throw a pitch.

Keep Coaching Feedback to a Minimum

It has to do with the Goldilocks Golden Rule.  Too much feedback, and you’re micro-managing.  Nothing at all, and the player never knows if they’re on the right track.  But just the right amount, strategically placed, makes a world of difference!

That’s the beauty of the Varied Reaction LIVE Toss Drill…minimum feedback is needed for the drill to work its magic.
