By the way, Blaze Jordan stands in at 6-Foot tall, and 217-Pounds.  And the preceding Blaze Jordan profile link may be a year or two old!

I received this email from Marty, Hudson White’s father, earlier this week:

“Hello, i just wanted you to know that i have followed you for years and teach your principles to my 14u son who just came in second place at the 15u power showcase in Arlington Texas ahead of the world champion Blaze Jordan . he also broke the world record for most consecutive home-runs in a row at 11. he was a year younger and 50-100lbs smaller than all the other contestants who were made up of the best hitters in the country. It was the most amazing thing that anyone had ever seen . i wanted to share the video with you and hopefully you can help make it go viral. all the hype is about Blaze Jordan for hitting a 503 ft home run, but for a smaller younger kid to go out and break the world record for most consecutive and beat blaze in the final round to come in 2nd place is a major feat. my son is a lead off hitter. so all hit hits were 395ft line drives. this is your student. this is the result of your teachings. i am very grateful!”

  • Came In 2nd place.
  • Beat Blaze Jordan.
  • Broke world record with 11 consecutive home runs in a row .
  • High school fences set up.
  • Left park 6 times.
  • Hit 390-ft average.
  • Just turned 14.
  • 5-foot, 7-inches, 130-pounds.
  • Normally a lead off 1,2 hole on nationally ranked teams.

“…This year he was a freshman on varsity at Byron Nelson High School. He was starting 2nd and 3 hole. He led all north Texas in hits most of the season and finished 7th overall with 45.  He was hitting the ball hard somewhere!  Hudson was named District 5-6A Unanimous Newcomer Of The Year and All – Area Newcomer of the year finishing 7th in area with 45 hits, 25 RBI, 21 runs , 16 SB.

“He finished regular season number 8 in texas in hits, number 6 in extra base hits , and number 1 in doubles. Thats 4a,5a,6a. He’s number 2 in extra base hits in 6a and number 1 in doubles. And thats in arguably one of the top 5 toughest districts in the nation with 2 state champions from last year. The 6a champ and last years 5a champ moved up to 6a. Those coaches of the 5a state team go on an on about what a huge difference in competition in 6a where every team has 4 dudes.”

Dustin Pedroia: How-To Fix Stepping In The Bucket

Discover how to drills to stop a batter from stepping out of the box and into the bucket for baseball and softball players.  What is stepping out of the box mean and should a hitter step when batting?

I took Mixed Martial Arts classes before it was considered MMA back in Junior High and High School.  We practiced A LOT of grappling and lock & holds.  One thing my Sensei (teacher) used to say when grabbing someone on the wrist, the common opponent response is to pull back, or fight against the resistance

This week’s Dustin Pedroia video post will look at this fighting against the resistance concept.  I’ll show you how fix stepping in the bucket using a little known human movement science technique called Reactive Neuromuscular Training (or RNT).

In this video blog post, we’re going to discuss:

  • Problems with stepping in the bucket,
  • Stepping out as a legit hitting strategy?  And,
  • The #1 fix to stepping out.

Dr. Mark Cheng, kettlebell and corrective movement training expert, calls RNT “reverse psychology for the body”.  He adds that “RNT operates on the premise that the body will do what it needs to maintain balance – homeostasis”.  Essentially, we’re going to be training what Dr. Mark Cheng refers to as “feeding the mistake”

Problems with Stepping in the Bucket

Stepping in the bucket is most prevalent at the Little League and youth softball levels.  It’s when a hitter strides or steps away from home plate, which creates a big hole in their swing on the outside part of the plate.  Contrarily, it can also be used as a legitimate strategy (crowding the plate) at the higher levels – we’ll get into that in a bit.  At the youth levels, it can be caused by a few things:

  1. Fear of the incoming ball,
  2. Laying barrel flat, or parallel to the ground, at stride landing…
  3. Problems getting around on an inside pitch, and probably the root cause…
  4. Not setting up the Fight Position (landing) correctly, and
  5. Takes away outer plate coverage.

Stepping Out as a Legit Hitting Strategy?

Let me be clear, I’m not condoning the use of stepping in the bucket.  In all youth hitters, it needs to be fixed.  BUT, I’m going to show you an example of a player who uses it to his advantage as he crowds the plate…

2nd-baseman Dustin Pedroia from the Boston Red Sox.  According to Baseball-Reference.com he’s 5 foot, 8 inches tall.  165-pounds, soaking wet.  In a 162-game average season, Dustin Pedroia hits 15 homers and 45 doubles per season.  His Batting Average on Balls In Play (BABIP – .307) and On-Base Plus Slugging% (OPS – .810) are above average.

Imagine what Dustin Pedroia could do if he was 6-foot, 200-pounds!

His home ballpark is Fenway, where it’s 315 feet down the left-field line.  Very advantageous to a right handed hitter.  How does stepping in the bucket work for him?

  1. He’s almost crowding the plate (look at back foot in photo to right),
  2. Because of #1, stepping out helps clear his pelvis before landing,
  3. Shows his numbers a long time, and
  4. As a result of #3, he can hit the ball to the opposite field like Derek Jeter.

So, let’s find out…

 

The #1 Fix for Stepping Out

As mentioned earlier, we’re going to infuse the Stepping in the Bucket Drill with RNT.  Or what Dr. Mark Chang refers to as “feeding the mistake“.  Here’s how you set up the Dustin Pedroia Stepping in the Bucket Drill:

  • You’ll need a workout band of light resistance from your local Sporting Goods store,
  • You’ll make a slip knot for the ankle,
  • The other end a partner can hold or can be secured using a wall anchor in the garage like in the video,
  • You want the band pulling the foot in the direction of stepping out (“feeding the mistake”),
  • At landing we want alignment with the heels.

Good hitting approach teaching plate discipline for baseball and softball players in 2022.  Aggressive High School hitting mindset by zero or one strike count, and how to pull the ball OR go to the opposite field.

…In this Matt Holliday video we’re mourning the loss of plate discipline in today’s youth game.  World renowned motivational speaker Tony Robbins once said,

“If you want to be successful, find someone who has achieved the results you want and copy what they do and you’ll achieve the same results.”

In his 11-year career, 6-time All-Star Matt Holliday has amassed an On-Base Percentage of .387 (according to Baseball-Reference.com).  This is impressive, considering the league average is .340.

Plate discipline is critical, and in this video, we’ll discover How-To:

  • Fix 5 common mistakes at practice,
  • Develop a solid plate discipline strategy, and
  • Pitch recognition is the Holy grail to plate discipline.

 

How-To Fix 5 Common Mistakes at Practice

We have to make batting practice as “game-like” as we can.  The FIVE worst mistakes are:

  1. Rapid-fire batting practice – take your time tossing the next pitch coaches.  You don’t have to wait 15-secs to throw the next ball but at least 5-7 seconds would be better than a pitch every 2-3 seconds is typically what I see.
  2. Adults standing up and throwing to young kids from 25-35 feet – this makes for an unrealistic plane of the pitch.  I typically throw seated on a bucket from about 20-30 feet.  This gives a move realistic version of the pitch plane.
  3. Marathon hitting rounds – hitting rounds of 10, 20, and 50 before taking a break.  In games, hitters are lucky to get three swings in one at-bat.  Instead of training like a marathoner, we must train like a sprinter or power lifter.  Less reps with higher intensity.
  4. NO home plate for pitchers to throw over – this seems like an obvious one.  No frame of reference (the plate) leads to having ZERO clue of where the pitch is in relation to the strike-zone.  Plus hitters adapt anyway, so we see hitters shuffling their feet when pitch is thrown inside or away.  And…
  5. NO plate discipline strategy – the commonly taught strategy out there is to sit right smack in the middle of timing.  Look away, adjust in.  Look in, adjust away.  Look middle-middle and adjust in or away.  Look to hit it straight up the middle.  Don’t let a juicy pitch go to waste.  The more a hitter levels up, the less likely these strategies work.  If this is news to you, then you MUST get educated in Effective Velocity from my good friend Perry Husband.

How-To Develop a Plate Discipline Strategy

Guys like Matt Holliday ABSOLUTELY have a strategy at the plate.  Coach Mike Batesole at Fresno State showed me this in 2003.  His 2008 Bulldogs won the College World Series.  For younger hitters, use this strategy in practice ONLY.  It doesn’t work as well in games until about Middle or High School, when pitchers get better with their accuracy and their own hitter game plans.  Check it out:

  • Hitters hunt either middle in or middle down.  Middle up or middle down.  Barrel path plays a bid role in this, check out this article for more on that.
  • Whatever location hitters is hunting, we can add a layer of difficulty by having them hunt either a fastball or curve-ball.  Randomly.  Not called out so hitter knows beforehand what’s coming.  So they hunt a specific pitch in a specific location, and ignore (or take) anything else.
  • A great way for beginners, if we were doing a middle in versus middle away fastball ONLY round, is for coach to throw balls inner half and outer have randomly, while hitter calls out “inside” or “outside” without swinging – only taking.  We can do the same for middle up versus middle down AND fastball versus curve-ball.  Do a ton of reps until they get good at it.  This is SUPER good for 10u hitters on down.  For both baseball and softball – curve-balls aside.
  • This is more for zero or one strike scenarios.  We call them “get-it, get-it!” rounds…if you get your pitch, then you GET IT!

Here are the two test swings from my intern for the summer, redshirt college Frosh, Tyler Doerner…

Using the Zepp (Labs) Baseball app, I wanted to use the Scientific Method to analyze if the baseball swing mechanics “squishing/squashing the bug”, during the turn, increases or decreases bat speed.  The term “squishing the bug” means rotating the back foot, on the ground, during the turn.  Like you’re squishing a bug.

This can be a very sore subject, and hotly debated with a passion, in the Church of Baseball.  Surprisingly, it’s still widely taught throughout the lower levels.  Although a few images off the internet of effective swingers like Cano, Bautista, McCutchen, etc. will reveal “squishing the bug” isn’t what the best are doing.

So we wanted to test it…

Background Research

One of the main objectives of whether to skip the foot, or keep it on the ground, has to do with transferring linear momentum, better known as un-weighting or forward momentum.  Check out these four HPL posts for a baseball swing mechanics background on this:

So, after reading/watching the above videos and posts, we should be at a common understanding of Forward Momentum.

The next objective of “squishing the bug” versus “skipping the back foot” during the turn, boils down to allowing the body to transfer energy effectively.  This has to do with springy fascia in the body…

In Thomas Myers’s book Anatomy Trains, he talks about a cotton candy like springy material that the bones and muscles float it, and what gives muscles their shape called fascia.

Specifically in the book, he talks about the Front & Back Functional Lines.  CLICK HERE for a post I did on this, featuring Ted Williams and Matt Kemp.

In the following video, Thomas Myers explains this idea of Tensegrity, or Tension-Integrity.  There are compression and tension forces acting on the body at all times.  Within the body these two opposing forces are always searching for balance…

For a hitter, if the body moves forward, but the back foot and leg stays behind, then these forces don’t get optimally transferred from body to barrel to ball.  In other words, the backside gets “left behind”.

Hypothesis

Based on the above research, I think “squishing the bug” baseball swing mechanics will have a depressing effect on bat and hand speed because it doesn’t allow for full transfer of momentum and release of elastic energy in the springy fascia.

Equipment Used:

Setup:

  • Forward momentum was taken out of this baseball swing mechanics experiment by hitting from a 1-2 second pause at landing
  • Back two “baseball markers” were set at about 3 baseballs apart
  • The two tests in the experiment were counter-balanced.  Which consisted of eight blocks of 25-swings done in the following order ABBA BAAB.  Say “squish the bug” was letter ‘A’, and “skipping back foot’ was letter ‘B’.  200 total swings were completed in the experiment, 100 per test.  Counter-balancing helps remove the “getting tired” and “not being warmed” up factors.

 

Data Collected (Zepp Baseball App):

There were significant changes in Average Bat & Hand Speed, Time to Impact, and surprisingly, the hitter’s Attack Angle in this baseball swing mechanics experiment…

Data Analysis & Conclusion

  • +8-mph difference in average Impact Bat Speed, siding on “Skipping Back Foot”,
  • +3-mph difference in average Hand Speed Max, siding on “Skipping Back Foot”,,
  • -0.019 difference in average Time To Impact, siding on “Skipping Back Foot”, and
  • +4-degree difference in average Attack Angle, siding on “Skipping Back Foot”.

 

Notes

  • I think the “Squish the Bug” baseball swing mechanics experiment results were overwhelmingly clear.
  • Tyler did not technically keep his back foot posted to the ground during the “squish the bug” tests, so there still was an element of un-weighting going on with his backside.
  • In which case, measuring Ball Exit Speed (or how fast the ball came off the bat) may have netted interesting data to consider, compared to Impact Bat Speed.  However, with the results with the other readings of Avg. Hand Speed, Time To Impact, and Attack Angle, I think we can put the “Squish the Bug” baseball swing mechanics myth to bed 😀
  • The data and results suggests that when a hitter “leaves behind their backside”, there’s a slowing down of forward momentum, and the body naturally decelerates because the springy fascia is forced to stretch, but not release.
  • Keep in mind what I call the Goldilocks Syndrome.  The back foot can skip too far (porridge too hot), and it can also not skip at all (porridge too cold).  We want the back foot to skip just right.

The Bottom Line?

In this “Squish the Bug” baseball swing mechanics experiment, “Skipping the Back Foot” showed a notable difference in average Bat & Hand Speed, Time To Impact, and the hitters Attack Angle.  I want to encourage you to tinker and test this for yourself.  The objective of these swing experiments is to put modern hitting theory to the test, literally.  We NEED to test based on data, not feelings.  Share these results with friends.





The toughest swing flaw to fix bat drag in youth hitters isn’t the one that looks the worst on video — it’s the one that looks fine at normal speed. A hitter with racing rear elbow swings hard. The barrel gets to the zone. And coaches watching from the third-base line miss it entirely until the weak flares and rolled-over grounders pile up.

This post covers the exact case study that changed how I approach bat drag: my local hitter Zach May, a 6’4″ sophomore in high school who had struggled with a racing rear elbow for over a year. In one 30-minute session using Reactive Neuromuscular Training (RNT), we eliminated the racing rear elbow — not just on one pitch, but across the board. Two related posts worth reading first: Hitting Tips to Boost Barrel Time on Pitch-Plane and Never Suffer from Bat Drag Again. Both generated the most reader responses I’ve ever seen on this site — and both problems trace back to the same root cause we’re fixing here.

What is bat drag — and why do coaches call it a racing rear elbow?

Bat drag and racing rear elbow are the same flaw described from two different camera angles. Specifically, racing rear elbow is what it looks like from the front: the rear elbow races past the hands toward the center of the body before contact instead of staying behind them. In contrast, bat drag is what it looks like from the side: the barrel takes a wide, looping arc away from the body before entering the hitting zone, arriving late and at a shallow angle.

The result is a premature barrel dump. When the barrel dumps early, hitters either:

  • Flare or miss completely to the opposite field — the ball goes over the barrel because it has dropped out of the zone
  • Roll over or get jammed on inside pitches — the wide arc creates a natural handcuff effect

As a result, it’s a frustrating flaw to fix bat drag with conventional instruction because every upper-body cue — “keep your elbow in,” “stay connected,” “knob to the ball” — works in isolation and disappears under game-speed stress. Therefore, the fix has to come from somewhere else entirely — and I’ll show you exactly where.

What symptoms reveal a racing rear elbow bat drag problem?

Three lower-body symptoms appear consistently in rear-racing-elbow hitters — and none of them are arm problems.

In Zach’s case — and I’ve seen this cluster repeat across enough hitters to call it a pattern — those three things showed up in his swing:

  1. Front leg not getting to straight at or past impact. With a lot of forward momentum in his stride, Zach’s front knee was staying bent through contact instead of straightening. That matters more than most coaches realize — I’ll explain why in the next section.
  2. Back knee not reaching 90–105 degrees during the turn. The back knee angle is a pelvis rotation indicator. When it stays too straight or collapses too far, the hips can’t fully rotate, and the shoulders and arms pick up the slack — which is exactly how bat drag is born.
  3. Downhill shoulder angle before landing. Zach’s shoulders were getting level before he even landed, rather than staying in the slightly downhill angle that sets up the correct swing plane through the zone.

Most importantly, none of these are upper-body problems. They’re lower-body and hip problems that express themselves as a bat drag pattern in the arms. That’s why trying to fix bat drag by coaching the arms rarely sticks. You can read more on the connection in this post about top hand drills that address the bat drag pattern from a different angle.

How does front knee position affect your ability to fix bat drag?

Front knee position determines whether the pelvis can fully rotate — and incomplete pelvis rotation is the most common cause of bat drag in tall, high-forward-momentum hitters.

Whether the front knee should stay bent or straighten at contact is one of the more contested debates in hitting instruction. However, the answer depends entirely on forward momentum — and understanding that distinction is essential to figuring out why the bat drag showed up in the first place.

Hitters like Mark McGwire and Mark Teixeira — big, wide-base striders with less forward momentum — keep a slight flex in the front knee through contact, and it works. But hitters like Jose Bautista and Josh Donaldson, who drive significant forward momentum into their swing, need the front knee to go from bent at landing to straight through impact. That transition is what transfers energy from a forward (sagittal) plane to a rotational (transverse) plane using ground reaction forces.

Think of an NFL wide receiver running a 10-yard cut route. He’s moving at top speed (forward momentum), plants his foot, bends his knee, then straightens it explosively as he changes direction — using the ground to redirect his energy. Drop and turn. That’s the same mechanism a high-FoMo hitter needs. For a deeper breakdown of the planes of motion involved, Wikipedia’s anatomical planes of motion reference is a useful primer.

Zach is 6’4″ and uses a lot of forward momentum. When his front knee didn’t get to straight, his pelvis couldn’t fully rotate, his back shoulder and arm picked up the slack — and racing rear elbow followed every time. Fix the front knee timing, and the upper body problem resolves on its own.

One update worth noting: we’ve since moved away from treating front knee straightening as an absolute requirement across all hitters. Hitters like Bellinger, Seager, and Rizzo keep significant front knee bend on pitches below the belt line and still produce elite exit velocities. The principle applies strongly to high-forward-momentum hitters — not universally.

How do you run the RNT resistance band drill to fix bat drag?

Reactive Neuromuscular Training works by deliberately feeding the mistake rather than fighting it. Instead of telling a hitter to correct a faulty pattern, RNT applies resistance that exaggerates the pattern — triggering the body’s automatic, reflexive correction response. In other words, it’s a faster re-patterning method than verbal cues because the nervous system responds to sensory input more reliably than to instructions.

Here’s the bat drag setup we used with Zach:

  • Two long resistance bands positioned as high up the thighs as possible (keep them above “the goods” to avoid injury). We used a heavier black band in front and a lighter red band in back, sourced from performbetter.com. A coach holds the front band; the back band is anchored.
  • Front band function: pulls the front leg backward, keeping the front knee bent — feeding the mistake. The hitter must resist by driving the front leg to straight, using ground reaction force.
  • Back band function: pulls the back leg forward, keeping the back knee from bending properly during the turn. The hitter must resist by driving the back knee to 90 degrees.
  • The hitter resists both bands simultaneously during the turn — which forces the pelvis to rotate fully and removes the conditions that create bat drag.

First, we broke the swing into two parts (load phase, then turn) before putting it together at full speed. The before-and-after comparison — both swings synced up 30 minutes apart — shows the elbow going from visibly racing ahead to pinned into the rib cage where it belongs.

Critical safety note: The person holding the front band is in the path of a swinging bat. This drill must always be facilitated by an adult coach who knows to clear the path. Do not run it as a teammate-to-teammate drill, especially with younger players who can’t stop their swing mid-motion.

Why does finger pressure fix bat drag when mechanics cues fail?

Even after the RNT drill produced visible improvement in Zach’s swing, the correction that made it permanent was simpler: finger pressure.

Finger pressure means squeezing the bottom three fingers of the top hand — hard — from the moment the front foot lifts, through the load, all the way to contact. That squeeze is what keeps the hands physically linked to the turning torso. Without it, a hitter can have correct hip rotation and front knee action, and the elbow will still race ahead — because the hands separate from the body during the turn.

The instruction is straightforward: “Bottom three fingers of the top hand — squeeze from foot-lift to contact.” Coaches often skip this cue because it sounds too simple. However, it addresses the bat drag at the exact point of failure: the connection between hand path and body rotation.

Related to this is wrist pronation — the active turning of the wrists through the hitting zone. Does wrist pronation fix bat drag faster than the RNT drill alone?

In some cases, yes. Wrist pronation — the active rotation of the wrists through the hitting zone at contact — naturally pins the rear elbow into the rib cage as a byproduct of the movement pattern itself. Hitters who respond better to feel-based cues than resistance-based training often get faster results from pronation work.

The practical cue is “turn the wrists over through the ball” — which sounds simple but requires the elbow to stay behind the hands for the pronation to work correctly. For hitters who keep reverting after the RNT drill, adding pronation drills in the same session dramatically improves retention.

Also worth noting: over-rotation is a bat drag trigger we see frequently when rotational mechanics are over-coached. If a hitter is being drilled repeatedly on “rotate more, rotate faster,” the compensation is often a racing elbow. Sometimes fixing bat drag means dialing back the rotation cue, not adding more work on top of it.

Tony Gwynn narrowed his stance late in his career and simplified everything. Derek Jeter spread wide and open. Josh Donaldson tweaked his setup more times than he can count. Today, Bobby Witt Jr. presets his hip before his stride, Freddie Freeman recently turned his front foot inward to close his hips, and Vlad Guerrero Jr. stands open to buy time on off-speed pitches. All of them are right. None of them look the same. And every one of them passes through the same five checkpoints that determine whether a stance actually works.

What did Ted Williams say the proper baseball batting stance actually requires?

Ted Williams was the most analytical hitter who ever played the game, and he addressed the stance directly in The Science of Hitting. His requirements were precise: feet slightly wider than shoulder-width, a slight bend at the knees, a slight bend at the waist, hands near the back shoulder, and eyes level on the pitcher. Williams was specific about hand position in particular — “The further your hands are away from your body, the longer it takes to get into the proper load position.”

Additionally, Williams was dogmatic about one mechanical truth that made his five-point stance framework worth following: hips lead the hands. The purpose of the stance, in Williams’ view, was not to look a certain way — it was to create the conditions for full hip rotation. Weight shift alone, he argued, does not generate power. Hip rotation driven by the stance setup does. Therefore, the stance is not an aesthetic choice. It is the setup for the baseball swing load that generates everything that follows.

For youth hitters, Williams also gave important permission: experiment and find what feels comfortable within those five requirements. He was not advocating for one rigid model. He was identifying the non-negotiables that apply to every hitter regardless of style.

Tony Gwynn said the baseball batting stance doesn’t matter — so what does?

Balance. That was Tony Gwynn’s definitive answer on the batting stance debate, and it cuts through decades of coaching disagreement in one sentence. Gwynn was direct: “Your stance doesn’t matter, but if you’re not balanced by the time you load, you’re out.” He went further: “Balance and adjustability go hand in hand; without balance you really have no chance to adjust.”

This is arguably the most useful framing for youth hitters and coaches because it correctly identifies the stance as a means, not an end. The stance is how a hitter arrives at a balanced, adjustable launch position. Consequently, a wide stance, a narrow stance, an open stance, a closed stance — all of them can work, as long as the hitter achieves balance by the time the stride foot lands. A stance that looks textbook-perfect but doesn’t produce balance at landing is worse than an unconventional one that does. How wide should your feet be in a baseball batting stance?

Shoulder-width to slightly wider is the most reliable answer, and it applies across virtually every elite hitter from Williams through today’s game. The exact width is secondary to what the foot position enables: a hip hinge, a loaded back hip, and a stable base for stride and weight transfer.

Josh Donaldson — who has changed his own setup more than a dozen times over his career — emphasizes what happens at the back hip. Donaldson teaches being engaged into the back hip, not the back knee: “When you are engaged in your back hip you have better balance than when you put all your weight into your back knee. When you are locked into your knee, you will naturally want to jump forward.” His weight setup focuses on the back heel and back hip working together — a subtle distinction that has major implications for load timing and hip rotation efficiency.

Bobby Witt Jr. takes that concept a step further with his hip preset. Before his stride, Witt’s belt buckle tilts slightly toward his back hip. This setup position means his hips are already primed to sequence before the stride foot lands — and when he does land, he arrives centered rather than drifting or rushing forward. That centered landing is what gives him the adjustability to cover all four quadrants of the zone. Where should your hands be in the baseball batting stance?

Near the back shoulder, close to the body. Williams said it plainly, and decades of swing analysis have confirmed it: the further the hands start from the back shoulder, the longer the path to the ball, the harder it is to generate bat speed, and the more likely the swing is to drag through the zone rather than accelerate through it.

Hand position in the stance also determines where the hands travel during the load. When hands start close to the back shoulder at the right height, the load is a compact internal rotation rather than a long reaching motion. That compact load is the difference between a short, direct swing and one that’s susceptible to bat drag — one of the most common swing killers in youth baseball. Furthermore, hands at shoulder height avoid the upward adjustment that occurs when the hands start too low and must travel upward to meet a fastball at the top of the zone.

Cal Ripken Jr., who changed his batting stance many times over his HOF career, consistently returned to one principle: learn yourself as a hitter. That self-knowledge includes understanding where your hands naturally fall at load — and whether that position is helping or hurting your path to the ball.

What are today’s best hitters doing in their stance that youth hitters can learn from?

The most instructive recent example is Freddie Freeman’s front foot adjustment in 2026. Freeman identified a problem — he was pushing balls to left field rather than driving them — and traced it to his hip opening too early in the swing. His solution was to turn his front foot slightly inward (like Corey Seager), which gave his hips a physical reason to stay closed longer before rotating through the ball. His quote on the result was simple: “Obviously that’s helped a lot.”

What makes this instructive for youth hitters is the diagnostic process. Freeman didn’t change his swing. He adjusted one element of his setup — front foot angle — and the downstream result was that his hips rotated more efficiently. That is exactly how stance changes should work: identify a specific problem, trace it to a specific setup element, make one targeted adjustment, and measure the result in ball-in-play data.

Bobby Witt Jr.’s hip preset is similarly instructive. Most youth hitters think of the stance as static — you set up, then you swing when the pitcher delivers. Witt’s approach treats the stance as an active, athletic position where the hips are already loaded before the stride fires. The result is that he gains ground toward the pitcher without losing tension in his rear hip, which gives him both direction and timing. The 5-point baseball batting stance check coaches use to diagnose problems fast

Across all the variation in elite batting stances — from Williams to Gwynn to Jeter to Freeman to Witt — five checkpoints remain constant. These are not preferences or style choices. They are the mechanical requirements that every effective stance must meet. Check all five and a hitter’s setup will work. Miss one and the rest of the swing has to compensate.

Checkpoint 1 — Balance

Weight should be roughly centered or slightly back at setup — not forward. Gwynn’s test applies: can the hitter hold the stance for three seconds without swaying? If not, the stance isn’t producing a stable launch position. Weight forward at setup means weight is already forward before the pitch, which eliminates any load and transfer.

Checkpoint 2 — Foot Width

Shoulder-width to slightly wider. Feet too narrow = limited hip rotation room. Feet too wide = restricted stride and hip mobility. The width should allow a full hip turn without the back foot flying out or the front knee collapsing inward. For stride mechanics tied to foot width, the setup and the stride length are directly related.

Checkpoint 3 — Hip Hinge

Soft knees with a slight bend at the waist. Standing too upright is the single most common youth batting stance error. An upright stance eliminates the athletic ready position — the same posture a shortstop uses when fielding, a basketball defender uses to stay in front of a ball handler. Without the hip hinge, there is nothing to rotate from.

Checkpoint 4 — Hand Position

Hands near the back shoulder, close to the body, at or slightly above shoulder height. This is the position Ted Williams prescribed. Hands too low create an upward path adjustment. Hands too far from the body create a longer, weaker swing. Check the baseball batting drills that reinforce this hand position through repetition.

Checkpoint 5 — Head and Eye Level

Both eyes on the pitcher, head still and level. This sounds obvious but is violated constantly when a hitter stands with their head tilted, chin buried in their shoulder, or eyes angled rather than level. A level head is a pre-condition for pitch tracking — the eye needs a stable platform to do its job. If the head is tilted in the stance, the visual field is already compromised before the pitch is thrown. What is the most common baseball batting stance mistake youth hitters make?

Standing too upright is the most common and most damaging stance mistake in youth baseball. A hitter with no hip hinge and no knee bend has eliminated the athletic position that makes rotation possible. The stance looks casual — like someone waiting for a bus rather than preparing to swing at 85 mph. As a result, the only power source available is the arms and wrists, which is not enough against any pitcher with velocity or movement.

The second most common mistake is hands too far from the body. When the hands start extended — out away from the chest rather than close to the back shoulder — the load path is immediately longer. Furthermore, extended hands create a loop in the swing path as the hands have to travel inward before they can go outward to the ball. That loop is the origin of most bat drag problems, and it starts in the stance before the pitch is ever thrown.

The third mistake is weight too far forward. Some hitters set up with their weight already on the front foot before the pitch. This eliminates the weight transfer that feeds hip rotation. Without weight moving from back to front during the swing, there is no transfer of energy — and without energy transfer, there is no power regardless of how sound the rest of the mechanics are. Think of it like a pitcher who plants their front foot and tries to throw without using their legs. The arm still works, but the velocity disappears.

Don’t say eye hand coordination or vision because that’s another common rebuttal.

The reality is, smaller sluggers MUST be MORE effective, in order to compete with sluggers bigger than them.

My hypothesis in this Jose Altuve hitting analysis is that he does some sort of PR training, OR has a God given early pitch recognition ability that allows him to hit the ball so hard, so often.

Sure, according to this Jose Altuve hitting analysis,

Zack is a 14-year-old hitter from Visalia, California, which is approximately an hour drive from me, one way.  And this is the first time I worked with him since about a year ago.  We’ve had about half a dozen session together in total.  And what I like about Zack is he asks a lot of really good questions during our sessions.

And before we started this session, Zack was having a challenge with hitting line drives.  He was either hitting the ball on the ground or non-productive balls in the air.

DISCLAIMER about the video:

  • Fortunately the video quality is great because Dad used his GoPro, but unfortunately I wasn’t mic’d up, so the audio isn’t like some of my other videos.
  • We’re at a public High School on a Saturday afternoon, so there are other team noises, bird sounds, emergency vehicles, etc. going on in the background that can be distracting.

Sadly, a few coaches on the socials will be overly critical of this hitter, and I’m asking you to suspend judgement.  The purpose of this video IS NOT about being overly critical of the hitter’s swing, it’s about the demonstration and use of sticky coaching principles.

Swing and coaching suggestions are welcome, but be nice coaches.

Now, for those coaches looking to learn and help their hitters get better…ONWARD…again!

A typically lesson I do, is organized like the following, from start to finish:

  1. Dynamic warm-up,
  2. Beginning Ball Exit Speed readings,
  3. Record and analyze current swing,
  4. Lesson, and
  5. Ending Ball Exit Speeds readings.

Part-3 lands you towards the end of #4 above.

What you can look out for in above video

  • Training something new should feel goofy, that’s normal…if they feel no change in movement at the beginning stages of motor skill development, then they’re repeating the same old thing (about 0:45 mark)
  • The arch and hollow (hunched) positions in Gymnastics.  “Hunch” can have a negative connotation, but reality says it’s a VERY SAFE position for a twisting spine to start in. CLICK HERE for a Zepp swing experiment that looked at the benefits of a “Hunched” spine. (about 1:55 mark)
  • Playing around with wrist snap variance using the target ankle resistance bands.  It’s NOT a roll over, it’s like a “waggle” that golfers use pre-swing.  Great defender against off speed and breaking pitches, AND increase BA by controlling the barrel.  Keep main objective in mind: hit ball as hard and far as you can.  (about 3:45 mark)
  • Working the Wrist Snap Variance Drill on the open field hitting targets. Hank Aaron was really good at this.  Watch Hank Aaron video below and watch his wrist action at impact… (about 6:15 mark)
  • The Frog Tape bat…barrel awareness.  Focusing on hitting a certain part of the barrel AND hitting it in a specific direction or target. (about 11:20 mark)
  • Discussing how switching bats between rounds forces a hitter to focus on adjusting their timing. Heavier/top heavy bats have to start sooner…lighter/balanced bats can start later.  (about 15:30 mark)
  • Zack made the observation that Finger Pressure makes the Wrist Snap Variance Drill easier to feel.  (about 17:30 mark)

 

Also, when it comes to sticky coaching principles, notice how I:

  • Move the tee positioning around after every swing (both high/low and inside/outside),
  • Vary soft toss heights and depths,
  • Vary mechanics on certain swings in a 5-swing round (I call these Varied Rounds), or practice one thing the whole round (I call these Block Rounds),
  • Ask quite a few feel, visual, and/or audio feedback questions AFTER round is over (think of it like a hitting quiz),
  • Keep my mouth shut during the 5-swing round (little to no feedback from me),
  • Don’t make Zack take a lot of swings during our time together,
  • Chunking certain movement together, so they don’t seem like separate pieces,
  • Have him change his bat size during rounds, and
  • Work with him on simplifying the juggling of a couple different mechanical cues.

I know, I know,

Some well meaning coaches will think, “Well, a closed stance cuts off a hitter’s vision, and/or restricts hip movement”

I get it.  I used to believe the same thing a couple years ago,

…But what I found in my research was counter-intuitive, yet very promising for hitters.

You don’t know what you don’t know, right?

My process is to chew and digest the science, observe how elite hitters apply the movements, and then try it out!

As you’ll soon find out, Giancarlo Stanton did his homework before making this particular change in his swing.

Since there may be many of you raising the same objections I started with, I wanted to discuss:

  • Addressing the above “Study of Planes” video, then we’ll move on to…
  • Analyzing the small change that has netted BIG results for Giancarlo Stanton this season.

 

Study of Planes

My good friend Seo Perales shared the above video with me a few years ago.  By the way, he’s a multiple level black belt in Brazilian Jujitsu.

We love comparing notes because we both like to seek and explore human movement principles that are validated by science.  The only difference is, in his line of work as a Jujitsu instructor, he wants to learn how to break down the body, and I’m into maximizing its effect.

Now, you may be thinking, “A Judo video? Really?!  What can I learn from a video about Judo?”

If you find yourself camped out in ONLY baseball or softball circles, then you’re missing out on A LOT of useful information that will take your hitters to a whole other level.

My good friend Lee Comeaux from Texas, who teaches professional and amateur golfers, also brought the power of movement planes to my attention about a year ago…

He told me draw an “X” in the batter’s box from opposite corners, and have the hitter stand on either line when hitting.  He’s very versed in Thomas Myers’s book Anatomy Trains.  He says hitters standing on one diagonal leg of the “X” encourages the springiness of fascia.  He taught this to his 15yo daughter, who has hit over .600 the last couple years playing Fast-Pitch Softball in Texas, which is one of the hotbeds for both baseball and softball competition in the country.  Oh and by the way, she also hit a half dozen homers as well.

The second part of this post, I wanted to share the tipping point in addressing Giancarlo Stanton’s new closed stance…

Giancarlo Stanton & The “Dreaded” Closed Stance

The straw that broke the camel’s back for me in writing this post, came from this MLB.com article by David Adler titled, “Closing time: Stanton’s stance fueling surge: Marlins slugger’s home run tear lines up with change to batting stance in June”.

You can go there and read the full article, but I wanted to tease out the quotes from Giancarlo Stanton (and some of David Adler’s commentary), and how Stanton arrived at the batting stance change…

I just said I was going to try it. Honestly, I had about 30 minutes of work, maybe 45 minutes, before the game,” Stanton told MLB.com Sunday, when he crushed his Major League-leading 45th home run against the Mets at Citi Field. “And then 10 minutes before the game, I was like, ‘This feels more comfortable.'”

Stanton was already having a helluva year, so it’s interesting to me that he made the change when he did, typically a change like this follows a slump.  However, this wasn’t a spur of the moment decision – like it sounds from that quote – he did his homework, which you’ll read about shortly…

“My best striking position is closed,” Stanton said. “It’s not smart to try to completely change something in the middle of the season. But if you are 100 percent committed to it … well, you’ve got to be. You’ve got to trust what you’re trying to do. If you change something, you want results right away, otherwise you try to go back. But I trusted it completely and let it ride.”

Sounds contradictory doesn’t it?  To have the attitude that you can’t completely change something in the middle of the season – especially when you’re already doing well!!  But then he says you MUST commit to giving the change time – that is – IF you’ve done your homework beforehand.

I’ve heard some parents and coaches say mid-season changes aren’t smart.  I don’t like to think that way…WHY?  Because if you don’t guide the hitter, the hitter will make changes on their own.  And if they don’t get highly resourceful on the subject, then this could lead to DISASTER with all the junk hitting info on the net these days.

David Adler did fantastic research illustrating the evolution of Giancarlo Stanton’s closed stance in this Tweet:

In the earlier mentioned article, Adler states…

“Stanton’s closing of his batting stance has correlated with his massive power surge. On June 18, he had 17 home runs in 282 plate appearances; since June 19, he has 28 in 236.

When Stanton hits from those positions [open or straight up], his front side can come open before the pitch arrives, leaving him exploitable.

The closed stance is a natural counter. When Stanton is already turned inward to start, his rotation drives him into the pitch, instead of causing him to fade away from it.”

By the way, for those not doing the math:

  • From start of season to June 18th, he hit 1 homer every 16.5 plate appearances, and
  • From June 19th on, he hit 1 homer every 8.4 plate appearances

He cut his rate in half!!!!  The closed stance was the ONLY change to his swing in that time frame, so this makes an interesting case study with a decent sample size of plate appearances.  See for yourself with the following David Adler Tweet:

David Adler adds some terms of comparision you may be familiar with…

“With his adjusted stance, Stanton has been driving the ball in the air more often. His rate of fly balls and line drives, per Statcast™, has risen from 41.5 percent prior to June 19 to 50.3 percent since. Stanton’s average exit velocity on those balls has increased from 97.6 mph to 100.8 mph, the highest in the Majors over that time.”

I don’t care that Stanton is a beast, if you increase your Line Drive and Fly Ball Rates (Launch Angle), and Ball Exit Speeds that much, you’ll make a lot of Ground-ball teams VERY VERY upset.  Small hitters CAN and DO take advantage of this formula too.  Statcast has given hitters the cheat codes to increase offensive productivity!

Furthermore, in the Adler article…

“[His stance] gets him in the position he wants to be in. It looks like it’s keeping him on the ball more, and he seems like he’s seeing it better,” said Christian Yelich, who’s played alongside Stanton as long as any current Marlin — since 2013, when he was 21 and Stanton 23. “Some guys have different problems than others. You go about fixing them or covering them in different ways. It’s all about feel. That’s what works for him, that feel.”

Look at that bold sentence once more because that is one of the most critical keys to this whole thing.  Yelich is also tapping into making extreme adjustments, for example, Stanton’s challenge in the past has been pulling off, maybe because of when he tragically got hit in the face a few years ago.  Whatever the reason, the extreme adjustment (a closed stance), helps him stay on the ball longer.

Now, here is where the article gets into the research that brought Giancarlo Stanton to the point of taking the stance change seriously…

“But at a level of the game where emulation is fundamental, success begetting imitators, Stanton found his prototypes: Nolan Arenado, Matt Kemp, Adrian Beltre, prominent hitters who do close off. He recognized past greats, too: Hall of Famer Andre Dawson works as a special assistant to the Marlins, and he hit with a closed stance in his playing career. Stanton didn’t copy the technical aspects of their batting stances, but their accomplishments gave him precedent to actually make the change himself.

Some on Twitter have written this change off as a band-aide, avoiding a true fix.  A true fix?  Are you kidding me?!  Cutting his home-run per plate appearance rate in half IS NOT a true fix!?  Dude!!  Success leaves clues.  These people are saying Giancarlo Stanton is “playing to the slice”, where a golfer who chronically slices the ball will angle his body at setup so they don’t have to fix the real problem…which is not squaring up the club face at impact.

This is a poor attempt to protect an inflexible teaching philosophy, and sheer laziness on their part to get educated on their craft they claim to know a lot about.  You instructors seriously think Giancarlo Stanton is not “squaring the ball up” at impact since June 19th and is just “playing the slice”?  That is laughable.  You don’t know what you don’t know, right?

This is the problem I have with instructors with inflexible hitting systems…they’re WILLFULLY IGNORANT to experimenting with things that could push their hitters forward, especially movements validated by science.  We’re ALL in this together, and we’re ALL helping hitters.  It’s NOT about your ego or protecting “your brand” coaches.

But I digress…

Here’s some insight into Giancarlo Stanton’s thought process with the change…

“I just know the guys with success,” Stanton said. “Arenado and Kemp, those guys, you know you can have a high average with it. So that kind of gave me the green light to try it…I knew it could work. Not very many people did it. But I know people like Hawk and them did it in the old days — and it worked for them, too.”

 

The Bottom Line…

Giancarlo Stanton: Tweet About Closed Stance

A day or two after re-tweeting Homer Bush’s Tweet about Giancarlo Stanton’s closed stance, I received this response from @Omaha_Outlaws4…

I understand your objections that a closed stance may cut off a hitter’s vision, and/or restricts hip movement.  You’ve heard me talk a lot about “keeping the back foot sideways”, well, this plays right into that.

Matt Nokes is religious on restricting hip movement to the point of impact with keeping the back foot sideways.  Homer Bush agrees in this interview.  So are the Backspin Tee guys Taylor and Jarrett Gardner.  LIGHT BULB! The closed stance does this naturally.

The main benefit of restricting hip movement at impact (includes keeping back foot sideways) that you’ll hear from Nokes, Bush, and the Gardner Brothers, is to keep the barrel in the hitting zone longer.  This increases BA and Slug%.

Here’s my advice:

  1. Chew and digest the science,
  2. Observe how elite hitters apply the movements, and then
  3. Try it out!

If it doesn’t work after giving it the ol’ college try, then toss it.

As many of you know, I will gladly eat crow and change my hitting system IF you can show me the science, swing experiments, and many elite hitting examples that I can’t ignore the issue.

Before & After Swing

It’s so fun to see young men – like Braden – begin to build in human movement principals like Un-Weighting and notice an instant jolt in force at contact.  I ask all my students, if you wanted to live, would you rather get hit by a train going thirty miles-per-hour, or a motorcycle going sixty?

Of course the motorcycle!  You see, the motorcycle swing is very handsy, fast like a bike but no weight.  The train swing uses heavy mass and the slower rotational speed of the torso to pack a wallop at impact.  Forward movement and Un-Weighting are only the beginning…

The Un-Weighting Principal

I’m working with Braden on throwing his body mass at the ball.  Much like a projectile missile.  This helps to make the bat feel lighter to the hitter.  And be able to turn harder with less muscle involvement.  The swing is a transfer of energy.  We’re taking the potential energy contained in the hitter’s body, and getting it moving to transfer into the barrel.  Then effectively shift this moving energy into the incoming baseball.

What Baseball Hitting Drill to Work on Next?

Braden is coming along nicely with his footwork – with the exception of making sure his lower half is mostly open at the Fight Position (landing).  We’ll be getting him to tap into the natural springy effect of his torso.  I call it the Catapult Loading System.  How the swing is loaded is a difficult concept for most to understand because their focus is on the wrong things:

  1. Not every great MLB hitter walks away from their hands.
  2. And not every great MLB hitter is swinging as effectively as they can.
  3. We tend to study the wrong hitters.
  4. And the camera view matters.
